ALTERNA APPOINTS NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO

News from Alterna (formerly Metro Credit Union):

The Boards of the Alterna Group have announced the appointment of John Lahey as the new President & CEO. Previously, Mr Lahey served as President and Chief
Executive Officer of Hamilton-based FirstOntario Credit Union. Prior
to his joining FirstOntario, he served as Senior Vice-President and
Chief Operations Officer in the E-Commerce division of CIBC. Mr
Lahey's start date will be July 9, 2007 and he will be dividing his
time between Alterna’s Toronto and Ottawa Corporate Offices.

Now let's just hope that Mr. Lahey wasn't in charge during the FirstOntario strike. Any ideas whether this is a positive or a negative sign for the credit union formerly known as Metro?

yes indeed Mr. Lahey was in charge.
He said after all "no one was going to tell him how to run his company..." The irony is that this is a credit union. It is not his company.....

He was fully in charged up to the time he left FirstOntario Credit Union this week.....

Mr Lahey's ruthless tactics have kept 69 women out on the street for almost 9 months. These front line workers saved the credit union a couple of years ago when Mr Lahey and his corporate team "botched" the banking system conversion; but for the dedication and unwavering support these employees put forth, the number of credit members who closed their accounts would have been much higher. Mr Lahey and the Board praised these workers, for their hard work during this "crucial" time, and then what does he do - he stabs them in the back; forces them to take strike action, not because they are asking for improvements, but because Mr Lahey wanted to strip their contract. Mr Lahey used and abused these employees - he is a tyrant - the financial hardship he has forced them to endure for almost 9 months is unimaginable, but more importantly the psychological impact it has had on these 69 women is unfathomable. Not only has Mr Lahey shown no respect nor regard for these workers'; he also has ignored the concerns and feelings of many credit union members who have been inconvenienced for almost 9 months. The events that have occurred since our AGM May 23rd, when the membership passed 2 motions to send this strike to binding arbitration and re-instate the 7 fired workers; speaks for itself. He has completely ignored the "will" of our membership and he has prolonged this strike, by dictating the items to be sent to binding arbitration and also the return to work protocol. It is common practice, while the arbitrator rules on the new contract, the workers return to work under the terms and conditions of their "old expired" contract, but oh no not in this case - oh no Mr Lahey will not agree to this - he has to keep these women out on the street - why does he even care anymore? - he has secured a new job at Alterna - so ask yourself - are these the actions of an egotistical, ruthless, man who just doesn't like to "lose"???....or are these the actions of a caring, compassionate CEO, who truly values his workforce?

Mr Lahey is totally responsible for the 9 month strike at First Ontario. He was calling all the shots - he was in "control" - after all in his mind First Ontario credit union does not belong to the members - he said quite openly that "this is his company" and "no one will tell him how to run his company". I guess Mr Lahey does not know the true meaning of what a credit union is - good luck to Alterna - you're going to need it.

God help the workers at Alterna - he will go after them them same as he did to the FirstOntario workers. Wonder how long it will take him to make extra management jobs so that his cronies from FirstOntario, who worked with him at CIBC can join him!

Oh, he was in charge alright. All of this debacle at FirstOntario can be laid at his doorstep!! Heaven help the workers and the membership of this credit union.
If he wants to hire someone called Tim Tiernay, watch out!
You can't send him back though. He's all yours!!

This is NOT a positive sign at all - Lahey has demonstrated his absolute "distaste" for the Credit Union movement by creating a strike in Oct 2006 and walking away 9 months later - leaving the employees still out on the street -and leaving us members still "inconvenienced".

I give him three months before he starts making changes and letting people go

Alterna employees and board beware - he will brainwash you - he is a "banker" not a credit union person.

The first few years that Mr Lahey was at FirstOntario, we all believed he was genuine; that he cared about the members and the employees; we all know now that it was all a facade - he only cares about "himself". How disappointed we all are in him - he had us all fooled up until 2 years ago. He has done irreparable damage to our credit union - things will never ever be the same again. he has succeeded in widening the gap between the salaried and union employees - so much so that I never ever want to go back to work there.

Time to get out of Alterna? Or change the Board, at least. Anybody want to join me in a motion at the Board meeting?
From "Pissed off Alterna member."

Good luck Alterna passing motions at your AGM. We passed 2 motions at FirstOntario's AGM in May and the Board ignored them, and allowed Lahey to continue along his path of destruction. So much for democracy at our credit union - it doesn't exist anymore - we might as well close our accounts and move to a bank. We once were part of a "family" at FCU, and now we are just a "number". The Board and management have lost sight of our morals, values and mission. Lahey has been instrumental in erasing all of the above and replacing it with mistrust, anxiety and uncertainity.

I would like some of the Alterna members to ask Mr Lahey; directly; why he ignored the 2 motions that were passed at FirstOntario's AGM May 23rd. What gives him the right to ignore the "will" of the membership at an AGM? If he had NOT ignored the "voice" of the membership we all would have returned to "normalcy" by now, and this 9 month strike would be over. Why would he NOT allow the outstadning items to go to binding arbitration? Why would he NOT allow the workers to return to work "immediately", under the terms of their "old" contract; until the arbitrator "ruled" on the new contract? Why....because the words "compromise" & "fair" are not in his vocabulary! Would he treat 69 men this way - I don't think so - he treats women as 2nd class "employees" - how sad is that!

I have worked for FirstOntario Credit Union for many years. When I started it was called Avestel Credit Union. I have seen the credit union go through many changes and a number of different staff. When John Lahey arrived there was hope that he would bring forth very positive ideas in how to make the credit union even better for our members. Little did we, the staff, know that his plan was to use and abuse us. He also managed to brain wash the management and some union sisters into believing that everything that has happened during this strike was all our fault. We were being offered a fair contract, therefore we deserved to be out on the street because we were being so selfish in wanting to keep what we had already fought for over the years. This strike has put us all into financial hardship and the girls who were charged and fired are not only dealing with the financial end of it all, but the agonizing torment of being fired. I for one have decided after so many years at the credit union that I can no longer work there and have made the very tough decision to leave. The things that have happened over these 9 months have in my opinion irreversibly damaged the credit union and the staff to the point that I can no longer see myself working there and being happy. I am very disappointed that it has come to this for me, but I feel I have no other choice and have to move on. I will still be there to support my sister's and I am going to try to keep in touch. I will miss them very much, but unfortunately I have a family who needs food on the table and a roof over their heads. I have had to put them first and lose alot because of it. Of course I would have it no other way, but it makes me sad when I think of how I always imagined retiring happily from the Credit Union and now must realize because of that tyrant John Lahey that that will never happen. What he has done has affected not only me, but my entire family and for that I can never forgive him. I can only hope that Karma will eventually take over and give him a swift kick in the behind. I only wish I could be there to see it. I hope and pray every day that this will end soon and that you will get a fair contract. Good Luck! and hang in there!

What is also interesting in all of this, is that a CIBC employee, when asked if she knew Lahey, also said "yes, and we don't want him back either..."
He just feels that it is easier to sabotage credit unions.
Ask your Board of Directors if they realize what they have done. Do they actually investigate these people when they hire them???

Dump the Board take over YOUR credit union - now there's an idea.
