Whose Sports? Our Sports - TorontotheBetter's first In Canada community soccer initiative under way in Jane-Keele-Finch corridor

TorontotheBetter is pleased to announce its partnership, as Red Panamericana Toronto, with the Hispanic Development Council and Toronto Azzurri Youth Sports Villa to create Canada's first Cruyff Court. part of a world-wide family of inner-city soccer facilities pioneered by Dutch soccer legend Johan Cruyff. GTA Co-op Connections Conference, Un-conference & Networking Event March 7th 2015

A great event for GTA co-ops courtesy of the Ontario Co-operative Assocaition:

GTA Co-op Connections - Conference, Un-conference & Networking Event

9am-5pm, Saturday, March 7, 2015
Centre for Social Innovation, 720 Bathurst St., Toronto

Last October, representatives from more than 50 GTA co-operatives participated in roundtable discussions on how co-ops of all types might work together to better support one another and further advance the co-op alternative.

The discussions were lively, informative and inspiring – and the GTA Co-op Connections event on Saturday, March 7 is the result.

The Co-op Connections event will be:
1) A conference with featured presentations;
2) An “un-conference”, meaning part of the agenda will be set by participants in advance and on-site; and
3) A networking opportunity for leaders, innovators, staff and volunteers from all types of co-ops.

Participants will have numerous opportunities for learning, sharing, discussion and brainstorming. And we hope one or more people from your co-op, credit union or stakeholder organization can be part of this event.

The registration fee includes lunch and refreshments. We have an early bird registration rate before February 16, plus further discounts for two or more registrants from the same co-op or organization.

Please share this with fellow staff, directors, members and friends. Register as soon as possible to take advantage of these discounts.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to get in touch: gta@ontario.coop.

There Is An Alternative to this season of very merry consumerism - buy from the Zapatistas and other social economy alternatives

Fed up with the annual North American of orgy of buying and selling?. As well as TorontotheBetter's social economy directory in Toronto there are other alternatives. The following was just received from TorontotheBetter fellow-worker Shawn Pelletier.

Dear Friends
I have been waiting a decade to be able to buy Zapatista products directly from the Zapatista's. Finally, I've found a website project that has made this possible.
So why should we buy from the Zapatistas? Money raised by the sale of local Zapatista products goes into supporting development projects in Zapatista communities. This means the building of schools, water treatment facilities, hospitals, homes, production facilities, farms and meeting halls to support the Zapatista community democracies. The Zapatistas offer the citizens of their communities many human rights including; food, housing, medicine, education, information, land, etc. Though these services are provided for free to Zapatista citizens, they are not free for the democratic government in Zapatista communties.
Anyways, the Zapatistas are awesome and the most powerful force on this planet today striving to create a world much along the lines of the values held by the wobblies.
Here is the online store and info

Cheers
