Demonstartion in support of locked out Cadillac Fairview workers; 9 March 2010

From an recent email sent out by the Greater Toronto Workers' Assembly Labour Caucus:

"Greetings!

We’d like to tell you about an important action

The Assembly is planning a demonstration in support of the 61 locked
out Cadillac Fairview workers, members of Communications, Energy and
Paperworkers (CEP) Local 2003, at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, March 9th,
in front of the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan offices at 5650 Yonge
Street (on the Northwest Corner of Yonge and Finch).

What’s so important about this issue?

The Cadillac Fairview workers struggle is an important battle for all
workers in Ontario and the GTA. The employer, Cadillac Fairview –
which made $1 billion last year – forced its maintenance workers on
strike, locked them out and later fired them. It replaced them with a
lower-paid workforce, in a carefully planned move to reduce labour
costs by breaking the union.

The employer’s actions also represent an attack on all workers’ rights
to bargain collectively and strike. If we can be fired when our union
disagrees with the boss’s demands the very notion of collective
bargaining is threatened. This is seen as a kind of model for many
other employers across the province, one of series of ongoing attacks
on workers. They are watching carefully to see how this ends up.
CF is wholly owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, which has
the power to end this outrageous situation. Teachers unions support
the workers and have no voice in the operation of the OTPP.
...
Please come out on March 9th and bring others with you.
