MEC & Urbane Cyclist at Bike Month 2012

In addition to Urbane Cyclist's numerous events at this year's Bike Month, Mountain Equipment Co-op is hosting a Bikefest at the Distillery District all day on June 23rd. From the Bike Month event page:


"Along with fun and festivities, MEC Bikefest is a hub of knowledge where cyclists new and old can make connections and get the information they need to pursue their passion. Proceeds from this event will be donated to our non-profit partner, the Toronto Cyclists Union."

Several TorontoTheBetter members are participating in Toronto's 2011 Bike Month...

- Janet Bike Girl is having an Open Studio May 30, 2011; 11:00 AM to 06:00 PM:
Come and visit to see a variety of bike stencil artwork..

- Bike Sauce is hosting a Coffee House June 4, 2011; 12:00 PM to 06:00 PM:
Come out and visit BikeSauce's brand new location, 235 Broadview, just south of Dundas. We'll be having tea, coffee and baked treats throughout the day!

- Bike Pirates is presenting three events...

Sweeets for Cycles! happens on June 4, 2011; 12:00 PM to 07:00 PM:
Our annual Donate a Bike event - with a twist! Bring in your old, neglected, well-loved or outgrown bicycle to donate to Bike Pirates and we will reward you with sweets! Bring in a bike and we'll give you something baked! At this non-profit community space your old bike will get a new life either by being build by a community member, or being refurbished for sale by our volunteers.

Their Annual Back Alley Bike Wash is on June 11, 2011; 2:00 PM to 06:00 PM:
Join us for our Annual Bike Wash! Sometimes your bike needs a bit more loving (and scrubbing) than you can muster. If you've just dusted off an old steed, or you recently went on a muddy ride in the Don, come to Pirates and we will clean your bike, pump your tires and lube your chain, all for a small donation.

And finally, their Third Friday Event is on June 17, 2011; 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM:
Please join us the third Friday in June for a community bike ride to visit Toronto's West-End community gardens. We will end the ride back at Bike Pirates for a low-key social.

- Urbane Cyclist's Urbent Event is happening June 4, 2011; 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM:
Learn about recumbent bikes and recumbent trikes!

- Mountain Equipment Co-op's 20011 MEC Bikefest takes place June 25, 2011; 1:00 AM to 06:00 PM:

More TorontoTheBetter congratulations for NOW Best of Toronto winners

...following up on a previous short post, I should also extend thanks to Bikes on Wheels for being voted the best Bike Mechanic in NOW Magazine's Best of Toronto 2010.

Also, Mountain Equipment Co-op was voted best sporting goods store.

And finally, The Big Carrot won in two categories: best Natural Food Market and best Vitamin/Herbalist Store - and come to think of it, that last win warrants some congratulations to Julie Daniluk, the nutrintionist and public relations worker at the Big Carrot...

MEC wins 2008 National Award in Governance

MOUNTAIN EQUIPMENT CO-OP CHOSEN OVERALL WINNER OF THE 2008 NATIONAL AWARDS IN GOVERNANCE


Mountain Equipment Co-op is the overall winer of the Conference Board of Canada/Spencer Stuart 2008 National Awards in Governance, for its implementation of a sustainability strategy.

In addition to the overall winner, awards for governance achievements in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors were presented at the February 11 gala dinner and ceremony in Toronto. MEC was the winner in the not-for-profit category.

MEC Opening LEED-Certified ‘Green’ Store Burlington

Mountain Equipment Co-op is opening its newest store in Burlington (between Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario) in 2008.The store will be the co-op’s greenest building to date and will meet at least the gold standard of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green-building rating system.

TorontoTheBetter Businesses among Canada's Best Corporate Citizens.

Corporate Knights has released its list of the 50 best corporate citizens in Canada. Coming in third place was VancCity Credit Union, parent company of Citizens Bank of Canada, and Mountain Equipment Co-op ranked 13th.

Companies were evaluated on environmental, social and governance indicators. Founded in 2002, Corporate Knights Inc is an independent Canadian-based media company that publishes the world’s largest circulation magazine with an explicit focus on corporate responsibility.
