TorontotheBetter to support Social Economy computer recycling with new directory partner Renewed Computer Technology
On Tuesday Jan. 21, 2014 TorontotheBetter was pleased to visit new GTA partner Renewed Computer Technology in Mississauga. RCT recycles old computers with the help of the young people it interns and trains and donates the resulting reborn computers to schools, charities and non-profits. The end-result of our meeting? TorontotheBetter will promote RCT's recycling program with social economy enterprises who want to avoid waste and make a contribution to public education at the same time. TorontotheBetter workers practice social economics - so can everybody

Following a recent TorontotheBetter co-operative meeting we asked our workers to tell us which social economy enterprises in the TorontotheBetter Directory they regularly used as part of their daily activity routines in the City. We were pleasantly surprised and confirmed by the number and range of the enterprises we collectively use and we thought that many others might be interested. Here are just a few of the social economy things we did in the last twelve months.

Under attack by government and employers, Cambodian garment workers need your support
An imporatant and timely appeal from our friends at the Maquila Solidarity Network:
On January 3, military police fired on Cambodian garment workers demonstrating for a decent minimum wage, killing at least four and wounding dozens more.
Over 20 activists have since been detained in a maximum security prison and some have been beaten, public assemblies have been banned in Phnom Penn, summonses have been issued for several union leaders, and there are fears that they will face charges for their participation in the strike.
Although the repression has forced the unions to call off the strike for the time being, there may be a resumption of protests in the future.
We urge you to respond to the call for action from the Global Unions, Cambodian unions and Workers United, by signing a LabourStart message of support for the Cambodian workers.

MSN has been collaborating with Workers United, the Clean Clothes Campaign and others in North America, Europe and Cambodia on efforts to convince major apparel brands to speak out against the repression and for a resumption of good-faith negotiations for a decent minimum wage.
