On "techno-feudalism"

If the leading players in today's fincial stasis come across as chesslike toys maybe it's because they are. The wealth of image-obsessed tech owners like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg is now so great that they have influence over governments and people comparable to that of feudal lords in medieval times. Because of its literally ethereal/wireless nature today’s resulting “techno-feudalism”, so called by politucal activist Yanis Varoufakis, is virtually unlimited. Established political orders are playing catch-up. And failing - as global energy disasters grow. So,the key question for today is how are citizens to exercise their increasingly only theoretical democratic power. The answer must be to incorporate controls in organizations at “birth”, when they are created. No business should be licensed without built-in popular controls much greater than the health and safety measures that populations fought for and established in the past. “Social Enterprise” must become standard enterprise by requiring the social and environmental controls, currently “ghettoized” in social enterprise, not by just wishing them. Doing business must be at the dctat of popular need, not that of owners.

On U,S. Statehood and life expectancy - forget it, Donald

OK - Donald Trump is known to get a few things wrong from time to time (usually) but ignoring the impact of U.S. statehood for the poor  or ill when suggesting Canadian statehood is a benefit ranks above his usual fibs. It would mean more disease and death for those least able to deal with it. Mind your own business, Donald. Here in Toronto, and the rest of Canada, we are better off without you.

BTW: Average Life Expectancy: Canada 83.26  [https://www.macrotrends.net/global-metrics/countries/CAN/canada/life-expectancy by;] U.S.A. 77.43   https://www.statista.com/statistics/263724/life-expectancy-in-the-united-states/

Hello TorontoStar - TorontotheBetter calling...

A January 2025 reader's message to Nicole Macintyre, listed as "Editor in Chief" of the Toronto Star, thanked her for a "Toronto the Better" feature in the Star's"50 Ways to be happy in Toronto" column. How involved the "editor in chief" is with random Toronto Star features may remain moot here but any fact checker still employed at Canada's leading newspaper should have discovered that TorontotheBetter/Torontothebetter.net, a publication of Libra Knowledge and Information Services Co-operative [libraknowledgeinto.net] pre-dated the message cited "Toronto the Better" by more than a decade. For any new/uninformed readers,TorontotheBetter makes Toronto better by enabling socially purposed shopping through ourTorontotheBetter [torontothebetter.net] directory, where awake/woke site visitors can find hundreds of socially purposed Toronto enterprises.. Nothing personal Nicole, but, however challenged today's newspapers may be, simple research, whether AI or not, should not be beyond even the tightest of budgets.
