Time for a world cup for the world

What are FIFA’s values? Recent actions. Banning fans from certain countries and comment less photo-ops with controversial leaders raise legitimate questions. Football in 2026 is more than “the game”.

Though massive in geographical scope the football (aka soccer) World Cup, as currently operated by private corporation. FIFA,football's governing body, spans the world and so is truly international, but "the world" has no rights in it. Originating from, and still played by, millions of  people on street corners and scraps of unpoliced turf football is a people's game and in our new globalized world the world  must act to ensure the people's game serves the people, As football has exploded in size and wealth in our age of global technology, it has become a locus for greed and corporate expropriation. Lacking responsibility for anything beyond spreading "the game", narrowly understood, FIFA has become identified for many as corrupt and antithetical to the innocent athletic pleasures at its root. In recognition of its weakening dignity as the 2026 tournament impends FIFA is engaging in reputational makeovers like its 2025 social responsibility committee and expansion of its  scope to spread tournament revenues to several countries instead of its historical single site. These initiatives are signs of FIFA's sensitivity to criticism but are unlikely to bring real change unless and until the massive social enterprise that is FIFA embodies independent oversight. Some countries require corporations to have such oversight. It is now time for the World Cup to include the world.
