For a better 2026 World Cup: Mexico's Sheinbaum plots a path forward

TorontotheBetter.net

As the USA, one co-host the 2026 World Cup, grows increasingly erratic partner Mexico, under president Claudia Sheinbaum has offered a way forward by proposing more games in America be switched to Mexico. In this way the people of a genuine soccer-first nation will be  given their rightful due and the travesty of a trophy ceremony officiated by fair play "anti-bodies" avoided. This would be a fitting step away from the World Cup's recent history of sleaze and sycophancy.. Following the 2015 exposure of corruption at its highest levels FIFA the governing body of world football in 2025 created a social responsibility committee and in 2026 announced a set of operational reforms. Football is the biggest and richest game in the world and so has an enormous influence on all involved in football around the world. Will these changes make a positive difference? TorontotheBetter hopes so but thinks not. FIFA’s stated goal is to "expand the game” not to use the game to  make the world a better place. Until this changes FIFA will get richer but its vast resource wealth will not have the progressive impact it could and should on a world currently enmeshed in much poverty, injustice and several murderous conflicts. FIFA needs a charter of social rights and responsibilities administered by an oversight body. TorontotheBetter, creators of Toronto's original online socially missioned business directory calls on all in Toronto and beyond in favour of real reform to make FIFA openly draft such a charter for World Cup host countries and cities and work for its implementation.
