Re: Why Neil Young’s got Big Oil worried

Hi,

This is a really big moment in Canadian history where we can finally put human rights record in order in our own house. To start with, Harper's "Truth and Reconciliation" and Canadian's shameful treatment of the First Nations peoples.
Sincerely,
John

TorontotheBetter workers practice social economics - so can everybody

March 31, 2014

Following a recent TorontotheBetter co-operative meeting we asked our workers to tell us which social economy enterprises in the TorontotheBetter Directory they regularly used as part of their daily activity routines in the City. We were pleasantly surprised and confirmed by the number and range of the enterprises we collectively use and we thought that many others might be interested. Here are just a few of the social economy things we did in the last twelve months.

-for our no-carbon bike transportation, the Community Bicycle Network                                   -for quality food and movie facilities, Good Times, Bad Times Tea Shop                                     -for environmentally aware dental care, Healthy Dentistry                                                     -for organic food  and cute stuff, Jola’s Good Catch                                                             -for coffee the much missed Alternative Grounds                                                                 -to recycle our old computer equipment Renewed Computer Technology and Computation            -for educational and cultural events Beit Zatoun
-to dryclean our clothes Market Organic Cleaners                                                                  -and to tell the world about TorontotheBetter we used the postal services of Toronto’s First Post Office

What we believe in we do. And so can you. Another economy is possible. For the many more options we host check our complete directory at www.TorontotheBetter.net.

Stay tuned to this space to learn how you can make many of your activities social economy activities. All it takes is a little bit of planning and, of course, the TorontotheBetter Directory, since 2004 Toronto's original multi-sector social  enterprise directory.

Under attack by government and employers, Cambodian garment workers need your support

An imporatant and timely appeal from our friends at the Maquila Solidarity Network:

On January 3, military police fired on Cambodian garment workers demonstrating for a decent minimum wage, killing at least four and wounding dozens more.

Over 20 activists have since been detained in a maximum security prison and some have been beaten, public assemblies have been banned in Phnom Penn, summonses have been issued for several union leaders, and there are fears that they will face charges for their participation in the strike.

Although the repression has forced the unions to call off the strike for the time being, there may be a resumption of protests in the future.

We urge you to respond to the call for action from the Global Unions, Cambodian unions and Workers United, by signing a LabourStart message of support for the Cambodian workers.

http://www.labourstartcampaigns.net/show_campaign.cgi?c=2129

MSN has been collaborating with Workers United, the Clean Clothes Campaign and others in North America, Europe and Cambodia on efforts to convince major apparel brands to speak out against the repression and for a resumption of good-faith negotiations for a decent minimum wage.

A joint statement was released to the media today which you can access here.

For more information on the situation in Cambodia, visit LICADHO: Cambodian League forthe Promotion and Defense of Human Rights or the Cambodian Community Legal Education Center.
