Launch of Socialist Register 2013 at Lula Lounge: January 31

The 2013 edition of the Socialist Register, the annual survey of movements and ideas from the standpoint of the independent new left, will be launched at the Lula Lounge on Thursday, 31 January 2013 at 6:30 PM.

More information from the Centre for the Study of Education and Work email listing:

"There will be a panel discussion with Greg Albo, Sam Gindin, Meg Luxton and
Joan Sangster as contributors and Leo Panitch as Chair.

The resurgence of social movements in recent years has put the question of
strategy back on the left's agenda. This volume of the Socialist Register
surveys some of the most explosive mobilizations around the world. But it
also asks, what are the challenges, both political and intellectual, for the
anti-capitalist left today? Some of the issues it takes up:

- the crisis of vision in trade unions -- can they still serve as a vehicle
for working-class organization?;
- the place of gender struggles in left movements today;
- the emergence of Greece as the epicentre for anti-neoliberal movements in
Europe;
- the condition of new anti-capitalist parties in Europe;
- a balance sheet for the Occupy Wall Street movement;
- the contradictions of progressive governments in South Africa and Bolivia;
- the promise and pitfalls of 'horizontalism' in the new movements;
- the mixed legacy of Leninism as a strategic vision.

Sponsored by York University Bookstore, Brunswick Books, Socialist Project,
and the Socialist Register.

Attn. TORONTO-Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge travellers - carshare options

For the many who want to minimize their carbon footprints while getting done whatever travelling they need to do,there are now some innovative options. Taking public transportation like buses or trains instead of personal automobiles cars for the long trips is one. But when you're at your destination you may need to do some inter- and intra-city personal travelling. I found Grand River Carshare a couple of years ago and as someone who often has to travel within the tri-cities it suits me very well. Even better, GrandRiver Carshare, Ontario's first when  it was founded in 1998, is a non-profit co-operative, so nobody's getting ripped off to provide the service. I was so impressed I joined the board for  a couple of years and now volunteer on one of the carshare committees. We can all help to reduce congestion, smog, stress and accidents and carsharing is one good way. To find out more check the Grand River Carshare website at http://communitycarshare.ca/grandriver/ And no,I'm not paid to do this. GrandRiver Carshare is an important part of our provicial social economy; as a member of TorontotheBetter's Alliance for Toronto's Social Economy we are pleased to reach out to positive initiatives by neighbours. We all benefit when our social economy alternatives grow.
